They also have some children's books about Welsh history and folklore. Despite the hardships this was the life they wanted and their time at Hafod in rural Wales surrounded by wildlife was compensation enough. I love 'Hovel in the Hills', I love 'Garden in the Hills' and I love 'Kitchen in the Hills' all written by Elizabeth West. Might I say all three are delightful books and once started are hard to put down. I just love those pictures.
This book is an inspirational read even if you don't want to follow the West's example, it is the best account of 'dropping out of the rat-race' I have ever read.

Kitchen in the Hills, unlike the first two is a simple cook book compiled by Mrs West during her years living in relative poverty,up in the hills in their little cottage in rural Wales in the 1960's.
Each stone was placed thoughtfully - bearing in mind the creatures that might like to live behind it or under it; each plant was placed where we felt it would be happiest.

I found this book after reading the Kitchen in the Hills, also by Elizabeth West, borrowed from a friend. I first read this book twenty years ago and have read it several times since. There is a stove called Stove and a wind-turbine called Charlie but, above all, there are field mice and polecats, rogue kale, and pied wagtails called Mrs Kinky Boots.

Huddling against the boulder-strewn hillside they cannot easily be seen from a distance. I have read an earlier edition of this work (from the 1970s), and cannot comment on any additions that the author has made, as I can imagine that she would have to add some notes to make dated references more comprehensible.

First read in the 1980's I have a soft spot for this book which charts in detail the struggle to live the dream of selfsufficiency under the most difficult circumstances in Wales.This couple really do live lightly on the earth, not always comfortably but pretty happily and this book played a part in convincing some of us to leave the city and head for the hills at that time.
