His parents shipped Stanley off to California in that envelope and when it was time for him to come back, Thomas’ family did the same thing. It was a very enjoyable read for me until page 42 when Stanley has to dress up as a girl and is comically humiliated, which made me feel slightly uncomfortable. I sent mine to my best friend who moved to England for the year. One morning Mr and Mrs Stanley go to wake up their two sons and find their son Stanley flattened by a notice board they received for Christmas!! All in all this is a great book especially for children in third and fourth grade. The situations Stanley and his family find themselves in are unexpected and extraordinary, but I never felt like their responses to the situations were natural, and I'm not sure if that was supposed to be funny or not. But, I really appreciated the theme of acceptance.
Since this book seems to be very simplistic and childish, I think it would well suit a younger audience, such as middle to late elementary school.
The images of the templates are in high quality. And I love twists in books, but.... a bulletin board! There are many projects that you can adopt or implement for your kid to learn about stuff and one of them is the flat Stanley project. They’ll then receive a letter and a Flat Stanley back from another child who is also participating in the project. This is a story of a little boy who woke up one day and was flat. This read aloud selection could be utilized at the beginning of a writing assignment for student’s to explore the ideas of living like Stanley.
I tied this into geography, connections to airplanes, then did a fun activity where the student drew Flat Stanley with a sentence and we e-mailed a picture of our class to my friend who is a teacher in California and she did the same. How funny and wierd is that.

I have to admit that the plot to this book is a little bit weird - a boy being flattened to 1/2 an inch thick because a bulletin board fell on top of him (but then again, vampires and werewolves and magic pants that fit everyone who puts them on are weird too).
It could even represent the feelings of some of the young readers who may begin wishing they were flat like Stanley got to be. I thought this book was really cute.
