If I remember right, Merlin's immortality is at least hinted at when Balinor is talking to him in the crystal cave, but I don't remember exactly how clearly it's said. In Romeo & Juliet, both characters die. Because at the end of the day, Merlin is still waiting for Arthur, and we as the audience have no way of knowing if his wait will ever end. I mean, I would have preferred an open-ended, happy ending that allowed the possibility that Arthur would rule for years in peace with Merlin at his side, everyone enjoying a Camelot that embraced magic... but since they made it clear early in the season that Arthur's death by Mordred's hand was prophesied and unavoidable, they had to kill everybody off, and I wasn't too dissatisfied with the way it went down. Apparently, Arthur has yet to rise again and Merlin is still just...waiting for him . If you’ve listened to our reaction episodes on Hypable’s Merlin podcast, Talks of Camelot, you’ll know that our initial reaction episode (which we recorded right after experiencing the finale for the first time) was drastically different from the much more structured episode we released a few weeks later after we’d had time to settle down and process exactly what it was the writers and showrunners had left us with. And even if it's sad for Merlin (Who is apparently immortal now) he knows Arthur will rise again someday and when that day happens, he'll be right there with him. I just finished this episode and hopped on here to find some answers as well. Sure Arthur died, but I feel like it was deemed to happen in the end (After all they spent the whole series saying he would die and Arthur's story is a legend). But in Merlin, there is no silver lining. We have fully embraced the theory that she and Leon eventually got married and had dozens of babies, because you know what? It's like their plan was...not a plan. I don’t really mind arthur’s death but I think I was more bitter that the magic reveal happened so late. Wizards: Tales of Arcadia's executive producer has explained why *that* big death had to happen. Press question mark to learn the rest of the keyboard shortcuts. Arthur didn’t start out the perfect heroic figure we know from the legends. I can’t get the idea of an episode out of my head where Arthur finds out or Merlin chooses to tell Arthur about his magic and it’s a massive internal struggle for Arthur, maybe even ending up with Merlin thrown in the dungeon. If you’re among the American fans who waited patiently for the end of Merlin’s fifth and final season to air stateside, we suspect you’re most likely still mourning over the loss of the series, and possibly some of your favorite characters. That said, there was a lot of truly awful writing for a lot of the episodes. As for the prophecy, I believe Merlin and Arthur's actions made Guinevere create a world where magic was no longer banned. Merlin regains his magical powers. Ethan Hawke and Maya Hawke will soon be sharing the silver screen together. I do, however, believe that Merlin in a way achieved what he was supposed to. When you strip it down, at the end of the day, Merlin is just a boy trying to figure out his place in the world. Why? And we hear a sword unsheathing. Let us know in the comments below! And so we, the audience, who see the world through Merlin’s eyes, will never be able to fully make our peace with the ending. By season 5 Merlin lives only to keep Arthur alive because he is destined to unite the kingdom and bring back magic, but all Arthur knows about magic is that it has only brought him pain and sorrow. Lady Whistledown causes quite the stir in the first trailer for Bridgerton— check it out below! As a result it was Arthur and Merlin who did all this indirectly but none the less bringng back magic and uniting the kingdoms. The ending shows Arthur being more accepting of his friend, rather than magic, although he thanks him for what he helped him build. And it’s not just us! Merlin was in his early 20's during the timeline of the show, so he was thinking smalltime. It as Merlin's destiny and job to tell and show him how magic could be used for good. If Arthur had returned in that final scene, or if there had been one single hint that Merlin’s wait was over, that would have been enough. Merlin or Gaius prove themselves spectacularly, then the next episode comes on, and are they a trusted colleague? I just hope Merlin was going ok in the future. Yeah, I get what you are saying, at least Arthur found out and was ok with Merlin being a wizard in the end. I would have been more satisfied with the show implying Merlin would go on to help Arthur lead well. Literally. While he never wanted reward or recognition for what he did, that didn’t mean he didn’t deserve it – that the audience wasn’t expecting that payoff after having to watch him carry his secret for all these years. One of the key reasons why the finale will stay with us forever is because of how deeply it moved us. The Death bed confessionals/forgiveness tripe was so far below what the fandom deserved... I decided to let myself watch the final season on netflix as one good go. The length of Merlin’s wait was far from the only question which the finale left unanswered. He knew that one day Arthur would return, which meant that whatever else he did, he always had to keep on waiting – seemingly forever, as the flash forward indicated. Edit: Oh, and I loved the idea of the modern day scene, even though I found the truck really jarring as it rushed past. By making Merlin younger, he ceased to be the untouchable enigma he becomes later in life. The entire Merlin fanbase, whether they loved or hated the finale, are still talking about it. ᴡᴇʟᴄᴏᴍᴇ, ᴛʜɪꜱ ꜱᴜʙʀᴇᴅᴅɪᴛ ɪꜱ ᴛᴏ ᴅɪꜱᴄᴜꜱꜱ ᴛʜᴇ ʙʙᴄ ꜱʜᴏᴡ, ᴍᴇʀʟɪɴ.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Or perhaps Arthur indeed already helped to save Albion and Merlin just looks after it all these years :) I'd love to believe it so maybe one day they could make a movie of it. But he had to die to let other events unfold. But even those endings are easier to get over than the ending of Merlin. The main thing would be to figure out how to look cute again instead of like a fake old guy. It's hard to imagine that he would never return to Camelot, after all Gwen was there and it was surely Arthur's wish that he would protect her and in merlins and gaius last scene gaius said that he would wait for him. The Dragon and Hunith told Merlin that he was only one side of a coin and half of a whole. When I settled on that interpretation for myself, it became a little bit easier to accept the ending, because it took away the feeling that they had completely failed. Also, Merlin made him realize how much he had helped him through his life on their last journey so I feel like nothing more was needed to be said about it. This is how I saw the ending too, especially since it fits the tone of the series so well. It seems to happen a lot when a show gets popular. It's been eight months for me and I still have occasional fits of sadness and/or rage about the ending.
